About the regional chapter:

IPT-Sub-Saharan Africa Chapter (IPT-SSA Chapter) is a non-profit organization with a view to expand delivery of mental health interventions and it accommodates all members interested in IPT within the region. IPT-SSA chapter focuses in research, advocacy, training and dissemination of IPT as an evidenced psychological intervention which can be scaled up to cover for shortage of trained mental health specialists. The regional chapter’s activities include trainings in WHO (2016) recommended IPT manual, sharing research experiences and capacity building efforts. The chapter also targets to disseminate new knowledge on adaptation of IPT to different cultural settings across SSA.

Training events for listing:

1) Trained and supervised community health workers as facilitators on IPT for a five year study “Intervention for Implementing mental health interventions for pregnant adolescents in primary care LMIC contexts (INSPIRE study).” The INSPIRE study (K43 TW010716-03), with aim to integrate mhGAP and evidence-based mental health intervention (IPT-G) for pregnant adolescents in primary maternal child care (MCH) service.

2) Trained and supervised community health workers as facilitators of Interpersonal Psychotherapy intervention for a four year study “Supporting Mothers’ Mental health with Interpersonal Therapy: A large multi-site study evaluating the impact of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) In Lebanon and Kenya (SUMMIT study).”

1) We are currently conducting IPT training for teams in India, Pakistan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya with a view to creating awareness on the benefits of adaptation of IPT for the underserved population.

2) Conducting monthly online meetings with colleagues implementing IPT/IPC across Africa (South Africa, Senegal, Mozambique and Uganda with intention of creating synergy across Africa
